<description>MEDICAL COOLER &#45; DEVELOPMENT OF A MODERN MEDICAL COOLER FOR PERSONAL USE

2013&#45;05&#45;29 10:00
ABSTRACT
The focus of the master’s thesis is to design a medical cooler for personal use with improved cooling capacity and improved reliability. The product segment was highlighted by friends prescribed with temperature sensitive biopharmaceuticals as to some extent reduce the quality of life. The mentioned experiences regarding the product indicated a product segment with poor performance and aesthetics. The insufficient cooling capacity of the medical coolers was especially experienced on long duration travels. It had sometimes lead to a state where the medication, which are to be taken regularly, was left at home during the sojourn even though the health was put at risk.
The product development was approached by an iterative process, which was initiated with a thorough literature and user study in order to define the system surrounding the product and the demands put on the medical cooler. Several concepts of medical coolers were created in order to explore, study and identify the different areas of potential product improvements. The concepts were analysed and evaluated using prototypes and other methods in order to select a final concept. As the final concept was translated from sketches to CAD models the concept went through an iterative refinement process. In order to properly evaluate the cooling capacity and user experience of the final concept, a functional prototype was created.
The final concept, Away, features a reliable medical cooler specifically designed for injection pens with biopharmaceutical substances. Away possess an improved design that extends the cooling time and enhances the overall user experience both by intuitive layout and appealing appearance. The design of Away is adapted to the use scenario of aircraft travelling and is developed to be easy to handle during the entire travelling scenario.
The findings of the master’s thesis indicate that there is great potential of improving the cooling capacity and user experience within the area of medical coolers. The thesis also demonstrates the possibility to take an important step towards improving the everyday life and patient security for users prescribed with biopharmaceuticals.

<description>CLOTHES FOR THE OPERATOR OF THE FUTURE &#45; DEVELOPMENT OF WORK WEAR FOR SWEDISH INDUSTRIES FOR THE YEAR 2020

2013&#45;05&#45;28 10:00
Abstract: The work was performed for the Department of Product and Production Development at Chalmers University of Technology within the framework of the Operator of the Future, a project funded by Vinnova. The Operator of the Future Project aims to explore the needs and requirements of the industrial operator in the year 2020, and how the value adding processes can be supported. The project identified the ability to change and development of processes as key factors for success in the future. While the industry has an ever&#45;increasing need for trained professionals, the proportion of the population who are willing to work within the industry in general is decreasing, and the part that are educated to work in industry is decreasing as well. Young people today say that they want to work in teams, with few position limits, and with an opportunity to be creative in their work. Today’s industries do not allow these aspirations, and the clothes aid in cementing that image.
The thesis explores how the population and industry conditions change for the year 2020, and what role work wear can have in that change. Today’s manufacturing industries were investigated through literature studies, observations and interviews. The symbolic and physical functions of today’s work wear, and the desired functions for 2020 were examined. By identifying two typical work environments and putting them in relation to the work wear currently used, the realization was reached that today’s clothing is inappropriate. In the first environment, the clothes are significantly better than they need be, and in the second they are considerably worse than they need to be.
Key factors for successful work wear were identified for users, economy and the environment. A need to investigate a number of currently not available dynamic anthropometric measurements was identified. The project resulted in a concept for future work wear, where a version of office clothes with improved mobility can be used in the first typical environment. These clothes have improved mobility compared to current work wear while they are better adapted to the conditions that actually exist in the industry. By allowing the appearance of operators and managers to converge, cooperation is facilitated which is desired by the future labor force. Concurrently, it may change the erroneous image which many have of the industry: that it is heavy, dirty and dangerous.

        <description>FROM FUNCTION TO PRODUCT

2013&#45;05&#45;06 10:00
This paper has looked at the existing market of small electric utility vehicles from a user perspective in order to understand the advantages and disadvantages of the different actors on this emerging market. The aim is to apply this knowledge on the development of a new generation of small utility vehicles that are capable of complementing a regular car. As this project is focused on a practical solution, the outcome is not a design study but rather a prototype ready design proposition for an existing company.
The finished concept is presented in two stages were the latter is an adaptation of the design suited for a prototype series. The most significant improvements were made through better user adjustability both regarding ergonomics and functionality. This combined with a distinct brand identity and production feasible concept will ensure that the vehicle is welcomed by its future customer.

2013&#45;04&#45;17 13:00
Abstract:
This project was carried out in collaboration with Whirlwind Wheelchair International; a San Francisco based non&#45;profit social enterprise dedicated to improve the lives of people with disabilities in the developing world. It was initiated to develop an adult active manual wheelchair compatible with the social, physical and economic conditions that currently characterize the situation in semi&#45;urban environments in developing countries. The new wheelchair design should also promote an increase of social integration of people in need of wheelchairs in semi&#45;urban environments in developing countries.
The project was characterized by extensive work abroad, including four weeks of concept development and prototyping at Whirlwind&#8217;s headquarters in San Francisco, CA, and two and a half weeks of user trials in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. The feedback from these studies was later translated into user requirements and technical specifications, which formed the base of the final result &#45; a new wheelchair prototype, which through its innovative design offers a solution that previously have never been seen by wheelchair riders in developing contexts.

<description>DEVELOPMENT OF A DEMONSTRATION TOOL FOR BONE ANCHORED HEARING AIDS

2013&#45;04&#45;12 13:00
Abstract
The Master Thesis project “Development of a Demonstration Tool for Bone Anchored Hearing Aids”, by Ellen Hultman and Samantha Lütkeman Pukala, was carried out at the department of Product and Production Development at Chalmers University of Technology. The project has been performed in collaboration with Cochlear BAS situated in Mölnlycke Sweden.
Bone conducted hearing is an alternative when single sided deafness, conducted hearing loss or a mixture of the two occurs. The bone anchored hearing aid provided by Cochlear, called BAHA, consists of three parts and require a surgical procedure to be implemented.
The project to come up with a new design of a demonstration tool was initiated as Cochlear defined a number of barriers to why patients refrain from the aid even though perceiving improved hearing. In addition new solutions to the BAHA system will soon enter the market, which is why the company requested a new way to promote the BAHA system options.
The final concept is a handheld product facilitating the conversation between the audiologist and patient. By interaction opportunities the tool promotes the patient to take a more active role during the counseling situation, aiming to create an understanding and build a relationship to the product. To overcome preconceptions the demonstration tool clearly and simply presents the different parts of the BAHA system in relationship to placement by an ear. A soft asymmetric grip creates attention and subtle colors and shapes support the presentation of hearing aid.
Research for the design was done through interviewing audiologists working with the BAHA system and observing patients during BAHA consultations. Analyzing company core values, communication strategy and competitors in addition resulted in a context analysis. The analysis set the foundation for an idea generation to meet all needs and move design focus from being technology driven to softer values. Several concept evaluations together with Cochlear representatives resulted in a final result where materials, manufacturing, use experience, and visual appearance have been accounted for.

<description>TORTOISE &#45; A CONCEPTUAL CARRYING SYSTEM FOR SENSITIVE EQUIPMENT

2013&#45;04&#45;12 09:15
Abstract
The Master Thesis project &#8220;Tortoise &#45; a conceptual carrying system for sensitive equipment&#8221;, by Rasmus Lindström and Alexander Littorin was conducted at the department of Product and Production Development at Chalmers University of Technology. The project was made in collaboration with the Malmö&#45;based company Boblbee.
Boblbee produces carrying solutions for the active user, mainly through various backpacks for skiing, motorcycle riding and photography. However, there is a gap in their product portfolio, manifested by the lack of a comfortable and reliable carrying system for sensitive equipment. Tachymeters (or total stations) are sensitive optical instruments that are used by professionals to produce accurate measurements all over the globe. They are large, expensive, heavy and sensitive to impacts. Hence, in the development of a carrying concept for sensitive equipment, tachymeters constitute an ideal reference product. Furthermore, as tachymeters are currently transported in hard protective cases unsuitable for longer hikes there is a market for a novel carrying solution that combines the necessary protection with well&#45;developed ergonomics.
The final concept is a backpack with a hard and a soft shell. Sensitive equipment can be safely transported in a padded compartment, designed to prevent ingress of fluids and particles. The softer elements serves to attenuate impacts as well as to connect the final concept to Boblbee&#8217;s brand identity. The bottom of the backpack is reinforced in order to allow for a stabile placement and heavy usage. The back&#45;plate and waist belt are designed to provide a comfortable carrying experience.
The research for the design comprised interviews and observations of survey engineers, a benchmark, ergonomic evaluations and a literature study on anatomy, load carriage and form design. Boblbee&#8217;s brand identity was analysed in order to ensure that the final concept would fit the company&#8217;s product portfolio.

<description>SOUND WASTE &#45; FROM INDUSTRIAL WASTE TO ABSORPTION OF SOUND

2013&#45;04&#45;15 14:00
Closed&#45;loop production has been proposed to enable sustainable use of material resources. This implies a continuous use of material resources, where the material itself never goes to waste but rather back into new production. However, most of today’s discarded goods do not end up in new production but in landfills or incineration plants. This indicates a need to better connect production with waste management and to encourage product developers to use discarded material to a large extent in a systematic way.
This thesis consists of two concurrent parts, exploration of workshop format as an Industrial Waste to Product Development (IWtoPD) method and application of the developed method on a real IWtoPD&#45;project reapplying PVC cable sleeves. The aim of the thesis is to deliver a methodology for how to address the challenges presented by IWtoPD&#45;projects and to conceptualize a realizable reapplication area of PVC cable sleeves.

<description>AUTOMOTIVE APPLICATIONS &#45; A STUDY THROUGH DESIGN ON INFRARED INTERACTION TECHNOLOGY

2013&#45;03&#45;22 10:00
Abstract
The Stockholm based company Neonode licenses infrared interaction technology and is moving into the automotive segment. The company now wants to further develop their technology to better suit the needs of the automotive industry and is also in need of material that demonstrates the benefits of using their technology to manage the interaction in cars.
The aim of the project was to summarize knowledge about Human in&#45;car interaction and to give an example of how this knowledge can be realized by creating a demonstrator featuring the Neonode technology. Recent publications regarding human car interaction were summarized and presented along with a number of crude conceptual solutions, demonstrating some possibilities for automotive applications. In collaboration with the Neonode team, a final suggestion on a new automotive demonstrator was then developed.
The final concept features suggested solutions to several of the problems uncovered in the background study. The final concept aims to keep the drivers eyes on the road and both hands on the wheel. Different ways to provide effective feedback when using touch solutions and a safer way of textual input in the driver environment is also suggested.
The conceptual solution was finally evaluated against a benchmark solution, and the result gave a clear indication that refined versions of some of the suggested solutions, if implemented in cars in a near future, could lead to a safer and more user&#45;friendly driving environment.

<description>DESIGNING THE FUTURE KITCHEN &#45; APPLYING EXPERIENCE DESIGN ON KITCHEN APPLIANCES

2013&#45;01&#45;31 10:00
Abstract
New expectations and trends create higher demands from the market, and product perception is changing all over the world. It is important for companies to differentiate themselves to be successful on an increasingly competitive market. High functionality and usability is more or less taken for granted and consumers are requesting new ways of satisfying their minds. Design for product experience is becoming more important and a way for companies to strengthen their brand, stay competitive and gain market power.
The annual “Electrolux Design Lab” is a competition held by Electrolux and was on the 2012 edition focusing on new product experiences in the home environment. This became the start&#45; ing point for this master’s thesis work that was carried out in Singapore in collaboration with the Electrolux design department. The aim of this master’s thesis work project was to design a concept that would facilitate for new experiences in the future kitchen environment (~10 years from now), with inspiration from professionals and the South&#45;East Asia region, fitting the core brand and design values as well as future market segments of Electrolux.
The project resulted in a final visionary concept with the name “Misto”. It is a modular shelf system that is enabling growing and storing fresh herbs, vegetables and fruits at home. The concept has potential to break new grounds in the way we live, cook, socialize and pay attention to our surroundings in the future. The concept relates to future global trends and future living scenarios and is inspired by South&#45;East Asia but targeted towards a potential global market.
