Ny MPA utsedd

“I am a researcher at the Division Design & Human Factors, studying the role that design of products and services can play for creating the preconditions for sustainable everyday activities. The goal is to find ways of facilitating adoption of sustainable innovations, activities, and more resource efficient interaction patterns. I mainly work in the mobility domain at the moment. I have a PhD in the topic Human - Technology - Design, which I got in 2015 with a thesis entitled “Creating space for action - supporting behaviour change by making sustainable transport opportunities available in the world and in the mind”.

Before I started as a researcher, I studied at Industrial design engineering at Chalmers for both the bachelor and master, and I am one of the first students that graduated from the Master’s programme Industrial Design Engineering. I have also studied Cognition science at GU, and managed to work a short period at Volvo AB before returning to academia.”

Vi önskar dig välkommen Helena och ser fram emot ditt arbete!

Presentation examensarbete - Sofia Friberg

Titel: Skis for women

When it comes to the world of skiing, it is mainly dominated by men. Many ski brands do skis specifically
for women today, but the number of skis are distinguishly smaller than for men. Faction want
to fill this gap by developing their women skis product line according to what the users want, as well
as for Roxy, for which Faction makes the ski design.

The purpose of this thesis was to investigate what skis that the female buyers of Roxy and Faction want
to have and how Faction can develop their women line and Roxy’s line of skis in order to meet these
requirements. The aim was to create a design suggestion for the product line for both brands.
The approach of this project was to make an extensive user study, including interviews with both advanced
professional skiers as well as average skiers, interviews with staff from ski shops and a survey
regarding ski habits and preferences for skis. Other than that a major benchmarking was conducted
to understand how other brands design their women skis. Additionally, testing a lot of skis from both
Faction and Roxy but also other brands, contributed to the study and was made together with the

The result of this study showed that the female skiers prefer women specific skis. They also want more
models and lengths to chose between. They are missing the high-technology skis that they find for
men, which has resulted in that many female skiers chose to ski on men skis.
From the result of the thorough research concepts for both brands were created. Together with the
company, decisions were made to make some changes in order to adapt to the existing moulds in the

The project has shown that there is a lot of potential for women skis today, despite the small differences
between men and women. The final design enhances this and takes these small differences into consideration, which makes the skis optimized for female skiers.

By offering a wider range of skis to chose from and by including high technology materials and
constructions the demand from the users are fulfilled. However, the main focus in this project have
been on user studies. This approach has made it possible to create a design that fits well together with
the market demands. This, in its turn, will also lead to and be beneficial for both the company and the

In conclusion, this project has produced useful guidelines that the company could definitely implement
in their further development of their women skis. It resulted in a concept for the full line-up of
skis for both Roxy and Faction.

“The 2016 scholarship committee has based on expected scientific quality of the publications, the scientific impact of the intended conferences, and the likelihood that the publications will be accepted decided to award the 2016 Student Research scholarship to the following candidates:
- Hanna Gustafsson and Sara Yxhage: ‘Fighting Panic with Haptics – A designer’s approach on how to create products for mental health’
In the decision, the committee has taken the submitted description of conducted work into account, but especially considered recommendations from supervisors and examiners.
The committee would like to congratulate the candidates, and compliment them on hitherto well-executed projects. The intention behind the scholarship is to acknowledge projects of high academic merit, and to promote dissemination of results to the scientific community making visible good practice. The committee hence look forward to seeing the final published work.
As the scholarship is intended to cover costs in direct connection to publishing at conferences etc., sensible, work-related expenses (for example conference fee, transportation, and accommodation but never food and drink) up to 7 500 SEK per person will be reimbursed against receipts. The committee also expects a short travelogue (circa 200 words) and pictures (circa 3) describing the conference, how the contribution was received, and the experience of the conference. For further practical details, please contact us.
On behalf of the committee/
Örjan Söderberg,
Head of MSc Programme for Industrial Design Engineering”

Presentation examensarbete: Evaluation and implementation of water recycling shower technology in new applications - av Richard Boden.

This thesis project is based around the concept and technology of water recycling showers developed by Orbital Systems. The objective of the project is to evaluate the feasibility of this technology in other applications as well as develop product concept designs around these. The project consists of a feasibility study that evaluates the water recycling technology in these applications as well as a research and design process in order to develop concept designs. The results will determine the feasibility in utilising this technology in other applications as well as present design solutions for potential future products.

Examinator: Professor Ulrike Rahe
